ANU Centre for Environmental History
The Centre for Environmental History is a dynamic teaching and research hub based in the School of History at The Australian National University on the unceded lands of the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples. Founded in 2009, the Centre seeks to foster and share historical studies and understandings of environments past, present and possible to create more just and equitable futures. By promoting research and education in the fields of literary, cultural, and environmental studies, EASLCE aims to cultivate a better understanding of the interrelationship between natures and cultures for a more sustainable future. They recognize that dialogue and cooperation across disciplinary and cultural boundaries is essential to that task, and therefore seek to foster a diverse community of scholars, educators, and artists who share a concern for environmental issues.
In the pursuit of these aims, EASLCE supports:
- scholarly and creative work in environmental literature, arts, and humanities;
- activities that promote the dialogue between the academic community and the general public;
- advocacy for and maintenance of ecologically sustainable practices.
Environmental History Resources
Environmental History Resources website explores the ways in which people have interacted with their environments in the past. It looks at humans being affected by the natural environment, but also our roles as agents of environmental change. The website includes podcasts, bibliographies, and a wealth of other resources.
The Environmental Humanities Center Amsterdam
Bringing together students, scholars, and members of the general public interested in humanities perspectives on the environment, the Environmental Humanities Center at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam – founded in 2016 – aims to foster an exchange of ideas. Grounded in the realization that today’s environmental crisis calls for an interdisciplinary approach, they wish to stimulate conversations among the humanities and the natural and social sciences.
ESEH I European Society for Environmental History

Estuary: A Harbour for Salt and Fresh Water Studies
Estuary is a transdisciplinary working group for student researchers, artists and practioners in the salt- and fresh-water humanities, social sciences and life sciences. Its goal is to provide researchers a space to discuss their water-related research, traversing disciplinary, national and institutional lines, forging new connections and opening opportunities for diverse conversations and collaborations.
Affiliated with H-Net, a network to provide discussion of any and all water history issues, their relationship to current issues, and to disseminate/share information, including new books and sources.
Haunted Shores Research Network
Haunted Shores is a global interdisciplinary research network that seeks to explore the rich literary and cultural history of coastal and littoral spaces in literatures of terror. The Haunted Shores Network aims to bring together researchers from around the globe, of various disciplines, to facilitate a space for learning and knowledge sharing.
IWHA- International Water History Association
IWHA fosters a stronger relationship between those engaged in water history and water administrators, engineers, scientists, planners and other practitioners. Creating public awareness of the role of water in world history and to promote public participation in resolving water resource issues is a main activity. Water History is the journal of the IWHA.

Network for Environmental Humanities – Utrecht University
The Utrecht University Network for Environmental Humanities was officially launched on 15 November 2021. It is a platform that brings together and supports researchers with an interest in environmental humanities with the aim of exchanging ideas and creating new synergies across disciplines. The Network for Environmental Humanities brings together scholars from different fields and disciplines with an interest in the relationship between humans and the natural world. The network is conceived as an open, bottom-up, experimental community open to anyone committed to questions of ecology, sustainability, and environmental justice. It hosts a variety of activities, offers a minor in Environmental Humanities and has multiple ongoing projects.
NiCHE: Network in Canadian History & Environment
NiCHE: Network in Canadian History & Environment / Nouvelle initiative canadienne en histoire de l’environnement is a Canadian-based confederation of scholars of environmental history, environmental humanities, and historical geography from both within and beyond Canada. They mandate is to coordinate networking activities and disseminate the research of those studying the historical relations between people and the rest of nature.
United States’ Environmental Protection Agency: Water Topics
EPA’s Water Topics includes information on current and past water issues in the United States. It places special emphasis on the study of the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act.
The Water Desk is an initiative of the University of Colorado in Boulder. It strengthens water journalism in a variety of ways, including offering education and community engagement, support for journalists, and producing their own original content. Their focus in on water issues in the American West.
