The ASEH currently offers four research fellowships: the Hal Rothman Dissertation Fellowship, the J. Donald Hughes Graduate Research Fellowship, the Equity Graduate Student Fellowship, and the Samuel P. Hays Fellowship. The Rothman, Hughes, and Equity Fellowships are reserved for graduate students; the Hays Fellowship is open to practicing historians of any rank. In addition, the ASEH co-sponsors the ASEH–Newberry Library Fellowship for scholars who will work with the Newberry’s extensive holdings in Chicago. 

H-Net Job Guide publishes a selection of academic vacancies in the field environmental history, including water history. The level of the positions varies from Post-Doctoral and Fellowships to Departmental Chairs and Full Professorships. While the location of the positions is not limited, the majority of them are located in the United States and Canada.

Research Assistant interns are talented undergraduates, recent graduates, or graduate students who combine part-time hours at the Center with their studies and other activities. Students work one-on-one with an expert in their field of study to conduct in-depth, academic analysis of today’s most pressing issues. Research Assistant interns have the unique opportunity to work directly with these experts, as they examine issues of contemporary public policy or explore topics that provide the historical context behind today’s pressing policy debates.
