The Kinzua Dam
Professor Paul Rosier talks about relevance of the Kinzua Dam, located in Pennsylvania, which takes its water from the Allegheny river. The dam is a way to talk of environmentalism in the U.S. in a wider concept. He speaks about entanglement in the Cold War of economics and defense, as well as the static impacts of the dam within the U.S. The episode is a journey within the strategic choices made by administrations after World War II of infrastructural investment, with particular attention to water, i.e., a system of navigation, transportation, and wealth. Interests groups, particularly, opposed the dam. Big infrastructures projects often jeopardize the lives of people in one particular region, rising legal and moral concerns. Rosier explores the link between indigenous people and the environment today, but also challenges such as pollution and the economic possibilities to contrast climate change.
